National Conference "Sleeping Delegate" Dies

One of the delegates of the National Conference currently being held in Abuja, a retired police Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Hamma Misau has died at the National Hospital in Abuja.

Mallam Misau, who passed from the undisclosed illness at the age of 67, became famous after the photo of him sleeping during the conference went viral in the social media.
Speaking with Sahara Reporters, cousin to the deceased, Barrister Mohammed Hamma, confirmed the information adding that a Muslim funeral will be soon held in Bauchi.

Sanusi Was Right: Ministry Of Police Affairs Benefited From CBN N20bn Funds

Premium Times conducted an investigation into the scandalous case of N19.7bn released by the Central Bank of Nigeria for the purchase of police equipment, and concluded that the Ministry of Police Affairs (MPA) benefited from CBN funds as claimed by suspended governor Sanusi Lamido Sanusi. According to Premium Times, the MPA deliberately misled the House of Representatives in simulating ignorance of a presidential directive mandating the CBN to provide N19.7bn for police equipment, and in denying receipt of the funds. The MPA permanent secretary, James Obiegbu, claimed the ministry’s non-involvement with the funds when the House committee on public account, chaired by Solomon Olamilekan, reviewed the disbursement of the money earlier this week.

Two weeks ago Sanusi had revealed the details about the expenditures in a statement in response to government's allegation of financial recklessness against him.
The expenditure, made public two weeks ago by the suspended governor of CBN, Lamido Sanusi, was spent on financing the purchase of new helicopters and security equipment for the police.
Sanusi said that the funds were released on President Goodluck Jonathan’s instruction, a disclosure that reportedly sought to underscore how Jonathan personally authorised some of the spending the CBN’s boss would later be condemned for by the presidency.

However, at the House committee meeting on Tuesday the police denied knowledge of the funds, and the MPA, which supervises the police, distanced itself from the allocation.
The ministry, the police echelon, and the CBN, were all to appear before the committee.
The inspector general of police, Mohammed Abubakar, who was represented by the an assistant inspector general, Ilesanmi Aguda, said the police knew nothing about the CBN disbursement and that the MPA would be better placed to respond to queries on the matter.
But the committee chairman quoted the MPA permanent secretary Obiegbu as saying the ministry had nothing to do with the CBN money.

"The permanent secretary approached me formally and told me that they don’t know anything about the money," Olamilekan said.

Premium Times says that according to the documents it gathered and reviewed, Obiegbu was merely deceiving the committee chairman, as the MPA clearly requested for, and took delivery of the CBN funds.
These papers are said to show how the MPA initiated a memo in 2010 asking for the CBN intervention, followed through with an application for contract award clearance from the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) and eventually awarded the contract for the purchases, having received approval from the president.
The ministry claimed it sought the intervention of the CBN because of the "enormous" cost of the contract.
The MPS said it had relied on three sources of funding: the 2010 budget, the CBN and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), and contributions from the police reforms fund.
It is not clear,  what  the role of the NNPC was   and how much it paid to the ministry, as only the money from the CBN were reflected in the communication between the ministry and the president.

A driver and three passengers travelling from Lokoja to Idah, headquarters of Idah local government have been reported to have died at the weekend.
 According to an eyewitness, who gave his name as Usman, the accident happened when the truck the deceased were in tried to escape a robbery gang who came out of a bush to block the main road.
Usman added that the robbers, who were numbering 15, were armed with weapons that included guns, machetes, bows and arrows.
He lamented that the robbers had turned the Idah highway to their haven.

BLOODY WEEKEND RESULTS IN THE DEATHN OF 98 PEEOPLE

At least 98 peopledied over the weekend, in separate incidents in the troubled Benue, Borno and Plateau States.
One of the bloodiest clashes between Tiv youths and suspected Fulani mercenaries erupted at Gbajimba, the headquarters of Guma Local Government Area of Benue State, in the afternoon of March 23, 2014, Sunday. They resulted in the death of at least 55 people.
The death toll of market bombing in Ngurosoye village of Bama council area of Borno State has increased to 35 persons. The Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) have been allegedly planted by Boko Haram members at a market square.
The deaths were recorded on a day the Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Kenneth Minimah, charged officers and soldiers involved in the ongoing counter terrorist operations in the North-East to ensure that the terrorists no longer have any opportunity to perpetrate atrocities.
In a parallel development, at least eight people have been killed in Wase local government area of Plateau State when a group of cattle thieves attempted to snatch cattle two kilometres away from Wase town.
Bomb Kills 35 in Borno Market

An alleged improvised explosive device went off close to the centre of the market, when most traders had come for business. Many shops were destroyed and the death toll reached 35 persons, while several others were also injured.
Ngurosoye is a farming community off the Sambisa forest and about 10 kilometres from Bama council area which had witnessed series of attacks by suspected Boko Haram terrorists in recent times.
The Police Commissioner of Borno State, Mr Lawal Tanko, confirmed the incident, insisted that “it was a bomb suspected to have been planted by Boko Haram terrorists at the centre of the market in Ngurosoye that exploded during market hour, killing several people and injuring others”.
He said a team of the anti-bomb squad had been already dispatched to the affected area to ascertain the cause of the blast.
Benue Is Boiling

In the Benue clash, heavy gun battle was ongoing in the besieged town, while women and children were seen fleeing to nearby villages and the capital city of the state, Makurdi, for safety.
According to Vanguard, the suspected mercenaries stormed Gbajimba, in the morning of March 23, 2014, Sunday, but they were repelled by armed Tiv youths, who engaged them in a bloody fight.
The Police station in Gbajimba is reportedly, helpless because it has less than 50 officers, and the number of attackers was completely overwhelming.
About 55 persons may have been killed on both sides, several people were still missing at the time of filing the present report.
The Police spokesperson, Superintendent Daniel Ezeala confirmed that serious fighting was ongining in Gbajimba at that moment, but he refused to give more details on further plans and counter actions by the police force.
8 People Killed in Wase LGC of Plateau During Raid of Cattle Thieves

In a related development, at least eight people have been killed in Wase local government area of Plateau State when a group of cattle thieves attempted to snatch cattle two kilometres away from Wase town.
According to LEADERSHIP, investigations revealed that seven cattle rustlers were killed, while a young man from Wase town was shot dead by the security operatives, when he was seen carrying a weapon, but resisted ther arrest.
The cattle rustlers allegedly came from Kadarko area in the same council, had attacked some herders on the evening of March 22, 2014, Saturday.
The herders had then sought refuge in Wase town. Later there was a shootout between the rustlers and the youths from Wase town.

Governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, Wednesday, obtained the All Progressives Congress, APC, expression of interest and Nomination form to seek reelection as governor of the Southwest state.
Fayemi, who secured his first tenure via an Appeal Court judgment in October 2010, which declared him as the duly elected governor of Ekiti State, obtained the form at the national headquarters of APC in Abuja.
Accompanied by his Deputy, Professor Modupe Adelabu, lawmakers representing the State at the National Assembly, the Director-General of his campaign organisation, Hon. Bimbo Daramola, Speaker of the House of Assembly, Dr. Adewale Omirin and his supporters, who arrived separately at the party secretariat, Fayemi stated that he is seeking re-election in order to consolidate the “good works” which his administration started four years ago.
He was received by the party’s Interim National Secretary, Alhaji Tijani Tumsah and the National Organising Secretary, Osita Izulaso.
The governor, who obtained the form with a N5.5 million Zenith Bank cheque, called on Nigerians to reject the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the 2015 general elections, adding that the “mishandling” of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) recruitment, in which no fewer than 19 applicants died, is enough reason to send the ruling party at the centre packing.

Fayemi, who called for a minute’s silence in honour of the dead applicants, said the PDP-led Federal Government has failed Nigerians, especially the younger generation.
He said: “My excitement today is tempered by the horrific news that we received a few days ago of the death of scores of young people who sought employment but were given death by the Federal Government.
“The inhumane treatment meted out to our young people nationwide in the course of the NIS recruitment is a sad commentary on the degree of incompetence that pervades our Federal Government under the PDP. I strongly condemn this ugly incident, which is a shame to this country”.
He also urged Ekiti people to be vigilant in the “coming days” and not be deceived by those he called desperate aspirants.

As the search, that was started yesterday, recovered no news o missing plane, the search was launched again early today with more ships to come.
According to the fact that the photo of possible wreckage from the Malaysian plane fligh MH370 was taken 6 days ago, and was revealed only yesterday, many experts claim that even if it was plane debris, they might be deep underwater right now. Indeed, as the experts say, the depth in that part of the ocean will make the search very difficult. Plane debris might be burried at the depth bigger than the place of the Titanic wreckage.

Black box, that is supposed to reveal the data from the plane is to activate a homing beacon and send a sonic ping, to locate it. Homing beacon is activated automatically when the plane is submerged under water. The ping would be emitted only if a plane is at depth of 14,000 feet or less, due to the pressure.
Note: Air France Flight 447 was found and recovered in the Atlantic Ocean at around 13,000 feet deep, almost 2 years after it crashed.

As the search area is very far from main land, the planes have only two hours to search for clues. As it takes 8 hours for the plane to get there and another 8 to get back to the main land.

Right now there are several merchant navy ships searching the area south-west of Perth, military vessels, aircraft.
It was also informed that the UK is sending HMS Echo to assist the search operation. This ship is designed to carry a wide range of survey work.
"Before being able to search for and identify the black box we need to narrow the areas of search," Hishammuddin Hussein says.
Norwegian merchant ship, St Petersburg also arrived to the search area along with an Australian naval vessel, HMAS Success.

Boko Haram Threatens To Attack Maiduguri Barracks

 Boko Haram have issued a written warning to the 7th Division of the Nigerian Army alleging they would attack Maimalari Barracks on Friday, March 21 (today).
According to sources, the insurgents sent the letter to the military through one of the drivers who managed to get through tight security. The letter was written in the Hausa language.
The security measures are beefed up in the Maimalari Barracks that accomodate the 7th Infantry Division of the Artillery Corps, the Ordinance, the Signal, Engineering and other crucial units of the Army in Maiduguri.
Although some security agents described the letter only as a means to instill fear among the soldiers, they are battle-ready to retaliate if need be.
It would be recalled that over 350 insurgents were killed and a number of Nigerian Army soldiers injured in the latest Boko Haram attack Giwa Barracks, the Headquarters of the 21 Artillery Brigade on March 15, 2014.

Military radar data suggests a Malaysia Airlines jetliner missing for nearly a week was deliberately flown hundreds of miles off course, heightening suspicions of foul play among investigators, sources told Reuters on Friday.

Analysis of the Malaysia data suggests the plane, with 239 people on board, diverted from its intended northeast route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing and flew west instead, using airline flight corridors normally employed for routes to the Middle East and Europe, said sources familiar with investigations into the Boeing 777's disappearance.
Two sources said an unidentified aircraft that investigators believe was Flight MH370 was following a route between navigational waypoints when it was last plotted on military radar off the country's northwest coast.
This indicates that it was either being flown by the pilots or someone with knowledge of those waypoints, the sources said.
The last plot on the military radar's tracking suggested the plane was flying toward India's Andaman Islands, a chain of isles between the Andaman Sea and the Bay of Bengal, they said.
Waypoints are geographic locations, worked out by calculating longitude and latitude, that help pilots navigate along established air corridors.
A third source familiar with the investigation said inquiries were focusing increasingly on the theory that someone who knew how to fly a plane deliberately diverted the flight.

Another Plane Goes Missing With 239 On Board

Malaysia Airlines said on Saturday that it lost contact with one of its planes carrying 239 people to China.
 Flight MH370 was on its way to Beijing when contact was lost, two hours into the flight early Saturday, the airline said in a statement. TheBoeing 777-200ER departed from Kuala Lumpur 12:41 a.m. local time with 227 passengers and 12 crew members and was scheduled to land in Beijing at 6:30 a.m., it said.
Malaysia Airlines Chief Executive Ahmad Jauhari Yahya told a news conference that the airline lost contact with the aircraft between Malaysian and Vietnamese airspace and that there were no reports of bad weather along the route. Mr. Ahmad said the missing aircraft didn’t send a distress signal and had enough fuel to fly an extra two hours.
He said the missing flight’s passengers include 153 Chinese nationals, 38 Malaysians and 12 Indonesians. Passengers from Australia, the U.S., France, Ukraine and Canada are also on board. Asked about the fate of the aircraft and passengers, Mr. Ahmad said: “I don’t want to speculate as search and rescue is still ongoing.”
The flight normally takes six hours, initially over water before crossing Vietnam into southern China.
Lai Xuan Thanh, chief of Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam, told The Wall Street Journal that he feared the plane may have crashed in Vietnamese airspace. “We still need to confirm everything. [There were] no reports of bad weather in the region at the time of the signal loss. We are ready to deploy search-and-rescue operations.”
A spokeswoman at Civil Aviation Administration of China said Malaysia Airlines notified it about the missing plane, adding the aviation regulator activated emergency plans and requested air-traffic control operations work closely with the airline and Malaysian authorities.

Sharing centenary award with Abacha, an insult — Soyinka

Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, on Saturday said he rejected the centenary award to be conferred on him by the Federal Government because the late military dictator, Gen. Sani Abacha, was included in the list of awardees.

In a statement entitled, ‘The canonisation of terror,’ Soyinka said it was an insult for him to be listed alongside Abacha for the award, more so when killings of innocent citizens by the Boko Haram sect was ongoing in the North-East.

Soyinka recalled the state-sponsored assassinations and abuse of human rights that occurred during Abacha’s reign as military Head of State, and asked why the Federal Government had not changed the names of roads, hospitals and other public facilities that were named after Abacha.

He said, “Under that ruler, torture and other forms of barbarism were enthroned as the norm of governance. Nine Nigerian citizens, including the writer and environmentalist, Ken Saro-wiwa, were hanged after a trial that was stomach-churning even by the most primitive standards of judicial trial, and in defiance of the intervention of world leadership.

“We are speaking of a man who placed this nation under siege during an unrelenting reign of terror that is barely different from the current rampage of Boko Haram. It is this very psychopath that was recently canonised by the government of Goodluck Jonathan in commemoration of one hundred years of Nigerian trauma.”

Soyinka added that by honouring Abacha, President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration had ridiculed Nigeria in the presence of world leaders by glorifying “murderers and thieves.”

“What the government of Goodluck Jonathan has done is to scoop up a century’s accumulated degeneracy in one preeminent symbol, then place it on a podium for the nation to admire, emulate and even – worship.

“Such abandonment of moral rigour comes full circle sooner or later. The survivors of a plague known as Boko Haram, students in a place of enlightenment and moral instruction, are taken to a place of healing dedicated to an individual contagion – a murderer and thief of no redeeming quality known as Sani Abacha, one whose plunder is still being pursued all over the world and recovered piecemeal by international consortiums – at the behest of this same government which sees fit to place him on the nation’s Roll of Honour!

“I can think of nothing more grotesque and derisive of the lifetime struggle of several on this list, and their selfless services to humanity. It all fits. In this nation of portent readers, the coincidence should not be too difficult to decipher. I reject my share of this national insult,” the statement read in part.

COLLAPSED BUILDING KILLS SEVEN

At least seven construction workers were yesterday feared dead when a three-storey building under construction collapsed along Enugu Road, Nsukka, Nsukka local government area of Enugu state.
 “I saw them working because I was in the premises when the building collapsed. Some carpenters and brick-layers were working in the building when it collapsed,” a source said, adding that the men were working on the last floor of the building when it collapsed.
It was later learnt that the collapsed building belongs to the Managing Director of Peace Mass Transit Company, Mr. Sam Onyisi.
Speaking on the incident, manager of Peace Mass Transit in Nsukka, Mr. Godwin Mbah, said he was surprised when he received a called that one of the buildings of his boss under construction in Enugu road had collapsed.
“I quickly rushed to the place and it was true. My prayer is that those trapped will be rescued alive,” he said. Confirming the incident, Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ebere Amarizu said investigation into the incident had commenced in order to ascertain the cause and number of casualties.
“Yes we have received the report of the collapsed of the 3-story building in Enugu road in Nsukka. We have commenced investigation to ascertain the cause and number of causalities,” said Amarizu

STORM DAMAGES BRAZIL WORLD CUP STADIA

One of the stadia that would be used for the 2014 World Cup holding in Brazil was damaged by rain storm during a league match in Brazil today (Sunday).
Shortly before a regional league match at the Mineirao World Cup stadium in Belo Horizonte, wind and rain blew debris from the roof of the stadium onto the pitch.
Just over three months before the big kick-off, workers had to sweep the debris away at the 63 000-capacity stadium after pieces of metal designed to collect and drain rain water became detached during a storm and plunged to the ground, Folha de Sao Paulo reported.
Three metal pieces came loose and fell, just before a match on Saturday between hosts Gremio and Minas Boca. Nobody was hurt.
Brazil has been racing against the clock to get its 12 venues ready, half of which missed a December 31 Fifa completion deadline.
Fifa last month dropped a threat to axe Curitiba, still behind schedule, after work was stepped up in recent weeks.
There have been fatal accidents at three venues – three at Manaus and one each at Brasilia and Sao Paulo, venue for the June 12 opening game between Brazil and Croatia.
Late last year, the roof of the new national stadium in Brasilia suffered rain damage just eight months after completion.

RONALDO SALVAGES POINTS FOR REAL MADRID

Cristiano Ronaldo equalized eight minutes from time as Real Madrid remained on top of La Liga thanks to a pulsating 2-2 draw against Atletico Madrid at the Vicente Calderon.
 Karim Benzema had fired Real into a third minute lead when he converted Angel di Maria's cross.
However, despite being denied a clear penalty when Sergio Ramos tripped Diego Costa, Atletico were in front by halftime thanks to fine strikes by Koke and Gabi.
Another turned down penalty appeal for a foul on Costa led Atletico assistant boss Mono Burgos to be sent to the stand as he tried to confront the referee midway through the second-half.
And Atletico were left to feel hard done when Ronaldo spun on the edge of the box to drill home a late equaliser.
A point for both sides means Real remain three points clear of Atletico, but Barcelona can move to within a point of Los Blancos should they beat Almeria later on Sunday.
Carlo Ancelotti's men came into the game full of confidence after thrashing Schalke 6-1 on their return to Champions League action in midweek and took just three minutes to open the scoring.

The Sokoto State Government, led by Governor Aliyu Wamakko, has said it spent over N800 million on the construction of the ultra-modern Orthopaedics Hospital in Wamakko Local Government Area.
Gov. Wamakko said this on Sunday when he paid an unscheduled visit to the hospital project.
He said “the hospital will be fully equipped with the state-of-the-art facilities and accessories to function in line with best global standards.’’
Wamakko also said that the state government had recruited six consultants, 30 nurses and 11 paramedics for the hospital.
He further said that a Chief Medical Director and other principal officers had since been appointed for the new health facility, which would be would be inaugurated soon.
“The state government wants to alleviate the suffering of the people of the area who hitherto have had to travel to Kano or abroad for orthopaedic treatment,’’ Wamakko said.
Also, the Commissioner for Health, Alhaji Ahmed Aliyu, restated the state government’s commitment to provide efficient health care services to the people.
“Everything is being done to ensure that Sokoto State is at par with the other parts of the world in all aspects of health care provision,’’ Aliyu said.

Multiple Bomb Explosions Rock Maiduguri

 

 The capital city of Borno state, Maiduguri, is under attack from insurgents believed to be members of the extremist Boko Haram sect.According to residents, two thunderous explosions, suspected to be from detonated bombs, were heard in the city at about 6.15 p.m. on March 1, 2014, Saturday. Then the third explosion was reported, but it has not been officially confirmed.

Terrorists in two vans, pretending to be firewood suppliers, detonated the bombs at a densely populated Ajilari ward, Jere Council area of Maiduguri, near Ngomari-Bulumkutu.

Yesterday The Commissioner of Police in Borno, Alhaji Lawal Tanko, confirmed the blasts. Tanko said 35 bodies had been evacuated:

“We are still counting. So far, we have counted 35 bodies. Our men are still working with rescue workers at the scene.”

 

Officials of the Nigerian Red Cross today confirmed that 51 people were killed while close to 60 were injured on Saturday when two bombs exploded in front of a cinema in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.

Rescue workers said among the victims that died were children, women that sell akara, men that sell barbecued meat (Suya) as well as children and football fans that were trapped in the cinema while watching soccer.

Most of the injured were taken to the Borno State Specialists Hospital and the Umaru Shehu Hospital in Maiduguri.

At the Umaru Shehu Hospital, many families were seen taking the remains of their loved ones for burial. "It is another sad moment for us, we have lost our children, our breadwinners and our neighbours," said Habiba Musa, who said two of her children were killed in the blast.
